Adelphic Society records

Abstract

The Adelphic Society was the younger of the two literary societies that flourished on the Augustana College campus during the early decades of its existence. The Adelphic Society was organized by the students in the fall of 1882, its first meeting taking place 14 October 1882. The Adelphic Society records, 1882-1929 and undated, contains organizational papers, financial records, publications, and other papers.

Abstract Augustana's Prohibition League was one of fifteen college chapters forming the Intercollegiate Prohibition Association. Formed in 1912, eight years before the 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution (banning the manufacture, sale, and transfer of alcohol) would go into effect, the Prohibition Leauge was a proponent of the temperance movement, and supported national organizations such as the Anti-Saloon League (1893). Abstract

The campus and public events collection, 1903-1941 and undated, contains weekly bulletins for campus events and happenings; meeting minutes and official records of Augustana College's Board of Control of Social Activities (later called the Board of Control of Campus Activities), which was charged with overseeing campus programming; and records of the college's Board of Control of Public Meetings, charged with coordinating public events on campus.

Iduna Society records

Abstract

The Iduna Society was founded 21 November 1902 and disbanded in the academic year 1925-1926. It was one of five Augustana College societies dedicated to the further exploration of the Swedish language through Swedish literature. The Iduna Society records, 1907-1922 and undated, contains three handwritten copies of the group's monthly publication, "Iduna," in Swedish, a bound book of meeting minutes in Swedish, and several miscellaneous documents in both English and Swedish.

The Lyceum records

Abstract

The Lyceum was formed by two rival literary groups at Augustana College, the Adelphic and Phrenokosmian societies, in order to create a lecture and concert series. The first recorded minutes of the Board of the Lyceum of Augustana College and Theological Seminary date from 1892, but there is evidence that the group existed as early as 1890. The Lyceum records, 1892-1931 and undated, has been arranged into three series: Lyceum general body; Lyceum Board of Directors; and ephemera.

Olof Rudbeck Society records

Abstract

The Olof Rudbeck Society, named after a Swedish scientist and author, was active on Augustana College’s campus from 1910 until 1928. As one of several Swedish literary societies on campus, the Olof Rudbeck Society was established to further the study of Swedish language and literature. The Olof Rudbeck Society records date from 1910 to 1928. The records consist of the group’s constitution, minutes, and one Book Concern receipt.

Phrenokosmian Society records

Abstract The Phrenokosmian Society is one of Augustana College's oldest student organizations. According to their constitution, the object of the Phrenokosmian Society was to "promote a Christian life, literary improvement, and intellectual development in general among its members." Abstract Miriam May Zwicker was born in Rock Island, Illinois, in 1915. She attended Rock Island High School and graduated in 1933. She then enrolled at Augustana College, which she attended from 1934 until her graduation in 1938, and majored in German.
